People planning to mudik using electric motorcycles are advised to prepare carefully. Electric vehicles have different characteristics compared to conventional motorcycles, especially in terms of battery and charging.
Automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, emphasized that careful planning is essential for a safe and comfortable trip.
“If you want to try mudik on an electric motorcycle, there are unique challenges. Proper preparation before departure is key to a smooth journey with minimal issues,” he said.
Know Your Electric Motorcycle Battery Type

The first thing riders need to understand is the battery system type. For motorcycles with a battery swap system, riders must know the locations of battery swap stations along the route.
If battery swap points are unclear from start to finish, using this type of motorcycle is not recommended, as it could create difficulties on the road.
For motorcycles with a charging system, planning charging times is crucial. Riders should also calculate the real travel distance, which is generally 20–30% shorter than manufacturer claims.
For safety, carrying a portable charger and proper adapters is advised.
Riding Style Affects Battery Efficiency
In addition to technical factors, riding style greatly affects battery efficiency. Riders are advised to avoid keeping the throttle fully open continuously.
Excessive throttle use can cause overheating, triggering limp mode. In this mode, the motorcycle’s power and responsiveness are limited.
If this occurs, riders should pull over and allow the motorcycle to cool down before continuing.
To further extend battery range, regenerative braking features should be used if available.
Be Careful on Wet Roads and Flooded Areas
Road conditions also matter, especially during rain. Even though many electric motorcycles are water-resistant, risks remain.
Riders are advised to avoid high water levels that could damage important components such as the controller or battery connectors.
Safety Is Always the Top Priority
Beyond technical aspects, safety remains the most important factor. Riders should ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before departure.
It’s also important to prepare alternative routes and extra time to anticipate traffic jams or charging station queues.
Equally important, riders must be in good physical condition. Adequate rest before and during the journey is essential for safety.
“No matter the type of vehicle, safety comes first. The rider’s condition is just as important as the vehicle’s,” Yannes emphasized.
