SAMPIT – An oil tanker caught fire while docked along the Mentaya River in Tanah Mas Village, Baamang District, Kotawaringin Timur Regency, Central Kalimantan, on Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out at approximately 5:30 PM local time and quickly drew attention from nearby residents. Large flames were seen rising from the vessel well into the evening.

Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Kotawaringin Timur, Multazam, confirmed that the fire was still active as of Saturday night.

“The fire is still active. This involves fuel top-up and engine-related components,” he said.

Firefighters Work To Prevent Spread

Dozens of firefighters, assisted by local volunteers, were deployed to the scene to control the situation. Their main priority is to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vessels and docking facilities.

Initial reports indicate that the tanker was undergoing repairs at a docking facility owned by a company when the fire occurred.

Palangka Raya Mayor Pushes Data Collection On Quarry Tax Compliance

Palangka Raya Mayor Fairid Naparin pushes quarry tax data collection to improve compliance and boost regional revenue.
Palangka Raya Mayor Fairid Naparin pushes quarry tax data collection to improve compliance and boost regional revenue.

The Palangka Raya City Government is stepping up efforts to optimize regional revenue. One of the key strategies being implemented is a renewed data collection process targeting taxpayers in the Mineral Non-Metal and Rock (MBLB) sector, particularly quarry mining businesses.

Mayor Fairid Naparin emphasized that the data collection process is being carried out regularly and continuously. The main goal is to ensure that all business operators comply with their tax obligations in accordance with existing regulations.

“This data collection specifically targets quarry mining activities, which fall under the authority of the local government,” Fairid stated.

Data Collection Involves Military and Police

Interestingly, the initiative is not only handled by the Regional Tax and Retribution Management Agency (BPPRD), but also involves the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri).

This collaboration aims to ensure that field operations run more effectively, transparently, and under strict supervision.

Such cross-sector cooperation is expected to minimize potential violations while also strengthening public trust in the local tax system.

Data Validation Becomes Key Focus

The renewed data collection also aims to validate taxpayer data, which has been considered potentially inaccurate in some cases.

In practice, discrepancies are often found between reported figures and actual conditions in the field—whether in terms of production volume or operational activities.

With more accurate data, the government will be able to:

  • Identify potential tax leakage

  • Map taxpayer compliance levels

  • Develop more targeted policies

Boosting Regional Revenue From Mining Sector

The MBLB sector has long been considered a promising source of Local Own-Source Revenue (PAD). However, actual revenue collection has fallen significantly short of expectations.

In 2025, BPPRD recorded a tax target of IDR 5 billion (approximately USD equivalent adjusted locally), but realization only reached around IDR 23 million.

This gap highlights the untapped potential that still needs to be optimized.

Through this data collection effort, the government hopes to significantly increase revenue from the mining sector.

Impact On Regional Development

Taxes paid by business operators will ultimately be returned to the public in the form of development programs and improved public services.

From infrastructure projects to community welfare initiatives, regional development heavily depends on optimized local revenue.

For this reason, the government is also urging taxpayers to be more proactive, aware, and responsible in fulfilling their obligations.

Encouraging A Healthy Business Climate

Beyond revenue improvement, this policy is also aimed at creating a tax system that is:

  • Fair

  • Transparent

  • Accountable

This approach is expected to foster a healthier and more sustainable business environment in Palangka Raya.

Compliant businesses will benefit from greater legal certainty and increased trust in conducting their operations.

FAQ

1. What is MBLB tax?

MBLB tax refers to taxes imposed on the extraction of non-metal minerals and rocks such as sand, gravel, and soil.

2. Why focus on quarry mining?

Because it falls under local government authority and has strong potential to boost regional revenue.

3. Why involve military and police?

To ensure the process is secure, transparent, and properly supervised in the field.

4. What are the benefits of this data collection?

To ensure accurate tax data, prevent revenue leakage, and increase regional income.

5. Where does the tax revenue go?

It is used for regional development, infrastructure, and public welfare programs.

Eid return travel 2026 on the Muara Teweh–Banjarmasin route begins to decline on H+5 as flight passenger numbers drop after the H+4 peak.

MUARA TEWEH — The return travel flow for Eid 2026 on the air route between Muara Teweh, North Barito Regency in Central Kalimantan, and Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, has started to decline on H+5.

Head of Haji Muhammad Sidik Airport in Muara Teweh, Muhammad Amrillah, said the number of airline passengers on Thursday was lower compared to the previous day, which marked the peak of return travel.

“Today, flights between Muara Teweh and Banjarmasin are seeing fewer passengers compared to H+4, which was the peak of the return flow,” he stated.

On H+5, a total of 57 passengers arrived in Muara Teweh from Banjarmasin, while 41 passengers departed from Muara Teweh to Syamsudin Noor Airport in Banjarbaru. The route was served by a single daily flight operated by Wings Air.

Peak Travel Occurred on H+4

Amrillah explained that the highest passenger traffic occurred on H+4, Wednesday (March 25). On that day, 68 passengers arrived in Muara Teweh, while 71 departed.

The surge was driven by travelers returning to work after the Eid holiday period.

“Passenger numbers are now decreasing as people have started going back to work,” he added.

Flights Dominated by Transit Passengers

Haji Muhammad Sidik Airport currently operates daily round-trip flights to Banjarmasin using Wings Air’s ATR 72-600 aircraft, which has a capacity of 72 passengers.

Most passengers on this route are transit travelers coming from major cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya.

Typically, they connect through Syamsudin Noor Airport before continuing their journey to Muara Teweh or onward to Java Island.

Pioneer and Subsidized Flights Continue

In addition to the main route, the airport also serves pioneer flights to Palangka Raya via Tjilik Riwut Airport.

These flights are operated by Susi Air once a week, every Monday.

The aircraft used is a Cessna with a capacity of 12 passengers. Ticket prices are approximately IDR 540,020 for the Palangka Raya–Muara Teweh route and IDR 493,420 for the return route.

Meanwhile, commercial flights operated by Wings Air on the Muara Teweh–Palangka Raya route are available four times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Return Travel Expected to Continue Declining

As the Eid holiday period comes to an end, return travel is expected to continue declining over the next few days. Flight activity is gradually returning to normal conditions.

This decrease in passenger numbers indicates that the peak of the return travel season has passed, marking the end of the high-mobility period during Eid.

BPBD Kotim Extinguishes Land Fire In Mentawa Baru, Residents Urged To Stay Alert

BPBD Kotim extinguished a 0.95-hectare land fire in Mentawa Baru Ketapang and urged residents to stay alert as wildfire risks rise during dry conditions.
BPBD Kotim extinguished a 0.95-hectare land fire in Mentawa Baru Ketapang and urged residents to stay alert as wildfire risks rise during dry conditions.

A land and forest fire has once again occurred in Kotawaringin Timur (Kotim), Central Kalimantan, prompting a swift response from the local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

Head of BPBD Kotim, Multazam, stated that the fire broke out on a privately owned plantation belonging to a resident identified as Muhajirin. The affected area is located in Bangkuang Makmur Village, Mentawa Baru Ketapang District.

“The burned area is estimated to be around three hectares. The landowner was not aware that a fire had started on the property,” Multazam said in Sampit on Friday.

Fire Started On Wednesday Afternoon

The fire was first detected on Wednesday afternoon (March 25). Emergency teams immediately deployed to the scene and worked to extinguish the flames until late evening, continuing efforts the following morning.

A total of 10 BPBD personnel were dispatched, supported by seven members of the Manggala Agni fire brigade. The team had to travel approximately 4.2 kilometers from the Sampit–Samuda main road, passing through Eka Bahurui Village to reach the site.

Peatland Conditions Complicate Firefighting Efforts

The fire burned through shrubs and vegetation on peatland, which presents significant challenges during firefighting operations. Peat fires are known to spread underground, making them difficult to fully extinguish.

The firefighting and cooling process lasted more than six hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:11 p.m. local time.

“We managed to contain and cool down approximately 0.95 hectares of burned land. There is still residual smoke, so cooling efforts were necessary,” Multazam explained.

Another Fire Reported A Day Earlier

A day before this incident, another land fire was reported on Jalan Ir Soekarno in Baamang Tengah Subdistrict, Baamang District. This indicates an increasing risk of wildfires in the region.

Authorities Urge Public Not To Burn Land

With rainfall intensity decreasing and dry conditions emerging, BPBD Kotim is urging residents not to clear land by burning.

Preventive measures are considered crucial, especially since much of the region consists of peat soil, which becomes highly flammable during dry seasons.

“Once peatland catches fire, it can burn beneath the surface and is very difficult to extinguish. That’s why prevention is our top priority,” Multazam emphasized.

Authorities hope that increased public awareness will help prevent further incidents and reduce the risk of haze that can impact public health.

FAQ

1. Where did the land fire occur?

The fire occurred in Bangkuang Makmur Village, Mentawa Baru Ketapang District, Kotawaringin Timur.

2. How large was the affected area?

Approximately 0.95 hectares of land were successfully extinguished.

3. What caused the fire?

The exact cause remains unknown, and the landowner was unaware of the incident.

4. Why are peatland fires dangerous?

Because they can spread underground, making them difficult to detect and extinguish.

5. What is BPBD’s recommendation to residents?

Residents are urged not to clear land by burning to prevent wildfires.
