Sanggau, West Kalimantan — A traffic accident involving a DAMRI bus occurred in Sanggau Regency on Sunday (April 5), resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

Head of the Traffic Unit of Sanggau Police, Iptu Andiet Tri Hatmojo, confirmed the incident. He stated that the accident happened around 1:50 PM local time on a downhill road in Penyeladi Village, Kapuas District.

“One passenger has been confirmed dead in a single-vehicle accident involving a DAMRI bus earlier today,” he said.

Chronology Of The Incident

According to preliminary police findings, the accident was likely caused by the vehicle losing control while traveling on a downhill road combined with a sharp turn.

The driver reportedly had already noticed issues with the braking system prior to the incident and attempted to drive cautiously.

However, upon reaching a steep downhill section followed by a right-hand curve, the bus began to sway to the left. The driver tried to regain control by steering to the right, but the vehicle ultimately became uncontrollable and crashed.

“The initial suspicion is that the brakes were not functioning optimally, causing the driver to lose control,” Andiet explained.

Victims And Emergency Response

Authorities reported that one person died, 10 passengers suffered serious injuries, and another 10 sustained minor injuries. All victims have been evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

The bus, bearing license plate KB 7710 S, was carrying 31 people, including the driver and conductor, traveling from Sintang to Ambawang Terminal in Kubu Raya.
