Asia Link Cable Becomes Highest-Capacity Hong Kong–Singapore Subsea Route

China Telecom launches the 6,200km Asia Link Cable, connecting China and Southeast Asia with more than 325 Tbit/s submarine network capacity.

China Telecom has officially launched the 6,200-kilometer Asia Link Cable (ALC), which landed at the newly built Chung Hom Kok Cable Landing Station in Hong Kong. The project is now the highest-capacity submarine cable on the Hong Kong–Singapore route.

Led and constructed by China Telecom as the largest investor, the project also marks the company’s first cable landing station outside mainland China.

The submarine cable carries a total capacity of more than 325 Tbit/s, with each fiber pair capable of transmitting 26 Tbit/s of data.

ALC connects several Asian countries, including China, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines. The network also adds more than 100 Tbit/s of new international bandwidth for China Telecom.

One of the project’s major developments is providing Hainan with its first direct international subsea connection, ending years of bandwidth limitations in the region.

With its large transmission capacity, the cable is expected to strengthen cloud computing services, artificial intelligence data flows, and cross-border digital trade throughout Southeast Asia.

China Telecom said the Asia Link Cable is part of broader efforts to strengthen Asia’s regional digital connectivity. Combined with other emerging cable routes, the project is designed to reinforce Asia’s independent digital backbone.

The development is also seen as supporting digital infrastructure growth under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

The launch of ALC is expected to increase regional data traffic capacity as demand for cloud services and AI infrastructure continues to grow across Asia.

Beyond improving international connectivity, the project is expected to strengthen Asia’s role as a growing global hub for the digital economy through faster and more stable data transmission routes.
