Russia Opens Direct Container Route to Tanzania to Expand Africa Trade

Russia expands its Africa trade network through a new direct container corridor to Tanzania via Dar es Salaam, strengthening exports and regional logistics access.
Russia expands its Africa trade network through a new direct container corridor to Tanzania via Dar es Salaam, strengthening exports and regional logistics access.

Russian transportation and logistics company FESCO (Far-Eastern Shipping Company) has completed its first shipment to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, through a new container route connecting Russia with East African markets. The cargo departed from Novorossiysk and traveled via India’s Nhava Sheva port, reaching Tanzania in around 45 days.

The first shipment included industrial spare parts and plastic products. The new route is part of Russia’s broader effort to expand trade access across Africa as global logistics networks continue to shift.

FESCO said the corridor creates new opportunities for Russian exports to reach several East and Central African countries. Dar es Salaam is currently one of the fastest-growing logistics hubs in East Africa.

The port provides strategic access to Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, increasing Tanzania’s importance in regional trade connectivity.

In addition to exports from Russia, FESCO plans to establish two-way trade flows. The company is targeting imports of Tanzanian tea, coffee, and other agricultural products into the Russian market.

Tanzania has invested heavily in port expansion and logistics infrastructure in recent years as consumer demand across East Africa continues to grow.

The new shipping corridor also reflects Russia’s broader strategy to build alternative trade networks across Africa and the Global South amid increasing fragmentation in Western-controlled logistics chains.
