A major fire struck a resident’s house in Gonis Tekam Hamlet, Gonis Tekam Village, Sekadau Hilir District, Sekadau Regency, on Tuesday (March 24, 2026) night.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM local time while the house was empty. The homeowner, Afifudin (35), was reportedly visiting relatives for Eid celebrations in Sekadau.
Fire Discovered During Community Gathering
Initial information about the fire came from nearby residents who were attending a tahlilan (religious gathering). Shortly after, they rushed to the scene and found flames already spreading from the middle of the house.
According to Sekadau Police Chief AKBP Andhika Wiratama, through Public Relations Officer AKP Triyono, the fire had already grown significantly by the time residents arrived.
Residents attempted to extinguish the flames manually using basic equipment while waiting for firefighters.
Firefighters Arrived 45 Minutes Later
At approximately 7:45 PM, residents contacted the Sekadau Fire Department. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 8:30 PM, bringing two water tank trucks and one portable fire unit.
After battling the blaze, the fire was successfully extinguished at around 9:15 PM.
House And Vehicles Destroyed
The fire completely destroyed a two-story semi-permanent house along with all its contents.
Additionally, two carry-type vehicles and two motorcycles were also burned in the incident.
Fortunately, there were no casualties. However, material losses are estimated to have reached hundreds of millions of rupiah.
Traffic Disrupted During Firefighting
The house’s location along the Sekadau–Sintang road (Km 15) caused traffic congestion during the firefighting process.
Police officers from Sekadau Police, along with personnel from the Simpang 4 Kayu Lapis security post, assisted in extinguishing the fire and managing traffic flow around the area.
Suspected Electrical Short Circuit
AKP Triyono stated that police officers have collected data from victims and witnesses and are currently investigating the incident.
“The preliminary cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit. Further investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact cause,” he said.
