BANJARMASIN — Eid celebrations in South Kalimantan this year didn’t just happen in homes or tourist spots. Correctional facilities and detention centers were also filled with emotional family reunions.

The Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) in South Kalimantan recorded a total of 9,875 visitors during the first two days of Eid. The number reflects strong enthusiasm from families wanting to stay connected with their loved ones behind bars.

Head of the regional office, Mulyadi, said that 4,155 inmates received visits during the period.

“Total inmates visited reached 4,155 people,” he stated in Banjarmasin on Monday.

Sharp Increase On Second Day

Breaking down the numbers, the first day of Eid (Saturday, March 21) saw 2,293 visitors, who came to meet 707 inmates.

However, the second day (Sunday, March 22) experienced a major spike. The number of visitors jumped to 7,582 people, visiting 3,448 inmates.

This made the second day the peak of Eid visitation across correctional facilities in the region.

Multiple Facilities Open For Visits

To accommodate the high demand, several prisons and detention centers opened special Eid visitation services.

On the first day, eight facilities operated visitation services, including Kotabaru Prison, Karang Intan Narcotics Prison, and Barabai Detention Center.

By the second day, the number increased to 15 facilities, including Banjarmasin Prison, Martapura Women’s Prison, and Pelaihari Detention Center.

This expansion ensured that families had better access and opportunities to meet inmates during the holiday.

Orderly And Well-Controlled Situation

Despite the surge in visitors, authorities confirmed that the entire visitation process ran smoothly.

There were no major incidents reported, and visitors were cooperative in following the established rules.

Mulyadi also expressed appreciation to families for maintaining order throughout the visits.

Officers’ Dedication During Eid

Behind the smooth operations were correctional officers who continued working during the holiday.

Mulyadi highlighted that many officers chose duty over celebrating Eid with their families.

“Officers were willing to forgo Eid celebrations at home to fulfill their responsibilities,” he said.

Their dedication ensured that services for inmates and their families remained a top priority, even during a major holiday.

Keeping The Spirit Of Eid Alive

Even within prison walls, the spirit of Eid remained strong. Families used the moment to reconnect, share warmth, and offer encouragement.

It was a reminder that Eid is ultimately about togetherness, forgiveness, and maintaining family bonds—no matter the circumstances.
