iPhone 17 Air vs iPhone 16 Plus: Apple’s Thinnest and Lightest iPhone Yet?

A recent leak from well-known insider Majin Bu gives us a first look at how the upcoming iPhone 17 Air stacks up in size compared to the iPhone 16 Plus. According to reports, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the direct successor to the 16 Plus and will be officially announced this fall alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

iPhone 17 Air: The Thinnest and Lightest iPhone Ever

Based on the leaked photos and rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will have a thickness of just 5.5 mm to 5.65 mm, making it the slimmest iPhone in Apple’s history. It’s also incredibly lightweight at only 145 grams. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge — which has a similar size — weighs around 163 grams. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is noticeably bulkier and heavier.

Sleek Design Comes with a Trade-Off: Smaller Battery

Of course, with such a thin profile, there are some compromises. According to leaks from Apple’s supply chain, the iPhone 17 Air will feature a smaller battery capacity of just 2,800 mAh. That’s nearly 30% less than the Galaxy S25 Edge’s 3,900 mAh battery. But don’t count it out just yet — there’s a strong chance Apple will use high-density battery tech, which could boost the real-world performance by up to 15–20%.

Apple’s Plan to Balance Power and Performance

Some insiders believe that the smaller battery is part of Apple’s strategy to push its smart battery cases more aggressively. Other sources hint that Apple is also working on a new AI-powered energy-saving feature that could help stretch out battery life despite the lower capacity.

If you're looking for an ultra-slim and lightweight smartphone, the iPhone 17 Air might be exactly what you need. Even though the battery is smaller, Apple’s smart features — like AI-driven energy efficiency and optional battery cases — could make this device a solid daily driver.
