Jakarta – A massive joint operation named Operasi Berantas Jaya was launched in Kembangan, West Jakarta, by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP). A total of 734 personnel were deployed to crack down on criminal extortion activities that have been disturbing the public.

According to Police Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, the Head of Public Relations at Polda Metro Jaya, the operation led to the arrest of 22 individuals involved in acts of thuggery. These individuals were affiliated with community-based organizations such as GRIB, FBR, and youth groups like Karang Taruna.

“Following surveillance and investigation, we identified and apprehended 22 suspects engaged in extortion,” said Commissioner Ade during a press statement on Tuesday night (May 13, 2025).

The suspects were caught with evidence including illegal parking tickets and notebooks listing the amounts of money collected. Several street vendors also testified that they had been forced to pay regular fees ranging from Rp10,000 to Rp1,000,000 each month.

“The local vendors have been suffering from these illegal collections for quite some time. They were truly anxious, and we had to respond swiftly,” he added.

This operation marks a firm response by the authorities against groups that exploit the community under the guise of local organizations. With these arrests, officials hope to restore peace and security, especially for small vendors and local businesses.

The police urge the public to report any similar incidents of extortion or unlawful acts. “We are ready to take immediate action based on public reports to ensure Jakarta remains a safe and orderly city,” Commissioner Ade concluded.
