You probably know Ryan Reynolds as the hilarious actor behind Deadpool. Well, he’s back in the spotlight with a bold new idea: he wants Disney to make an R-rated Star Wars movie!

In a recent episode of The Box Office podcast, Ryan revealed that he already pitched the concept to Disney. While he didn’t spill too many details, he did confirm that the story is set in the iconic galaxy far, far away.

"Why not do an R-rated Star Wars project? We don’t have to use the main characters—there are so many other great ones out there. And no, I don’t want to star in it. That would probably be a bad idea. I’d rather focus on writing and producing," Reynolds said.

According to Ryan, an R rating doesn’t automatically mean a film is filled with explicit content. For him, it’s more about being able to deliver deeper emotional storytelling—something that often gets watered down in PG-13 formats. He’s also curious why big studios shy away from that kind of risk.

"An R rating is like a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to take that leap."

So far, Disney has never released an R-rated Star Wars film or series. The closest they’ve come is Andor, which recently wrapped its second season. And by the way, Andor is one of the most critically acclaimed Star Wars projects to date.

Coming up next in the Star Wars universe is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will bring Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunter and the beloved Baby Yoda to the big screen. After that, director Shawn Levy will take the reins on Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling.

But still, Reynolds’ idea could be the shake-up the franchise needs. Imagine a more mature, darker Star Wars—still packed with action and adventure, but with a deeper emotional punch. Sounds pretty exciting, right?

If Disney decides to take a chance on Ryan Reynolds' R-rated Star Wars pitch, it could open a whole new chapter for the galaxy we’ve loved for decades. Older fans who’ve grown up with the franchise might finally get a version that speaks to them on a different level.
