Medan, Indonesia – The North Sumatra Police have successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large amount of methamphetamine into the country. In this major drug bust, authorities confiscated 7.5 kilograms of crystal meth believed to have been trafficked from Malaysia through a sea route.

According to Police Commissioner Jean Calvin Simanjuntak, Director of the North Sumatra Police Narcotics Division, the operation involved an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) and two couriers. They were promised a payment of IDR 40 million (approximately $2,500) to smuggle the drugs into Indonesia via Asahan Port.

“We estimate that this seizure has saved around 35,000 lives from the dangers of drug abuse. This success was made possible thanks to strong collaboration between the Criminal Investigation and Narcotics Directorates,” Commissioner Jean Calvin stated on Friday (June 20, 2025).

Three suspects—identified as SAR, SOL, and PAR—have been arrested. They allegedly worked directly with a wanted fugitive, identified only by the initials MUS, who is currently believed to be hiding in Malaysia.

The methamphetamine was intended to be delivered to Madura, a known distribution hub for narcotics. However, the police had already been tracking the network and managed to intercept the shipment before it could be delivered.

“This is the result of joint efforts by two directorates within the North Sumatra Police. We will not stop fighting against international drug syndicates,” Jean Calvin affirmed.

This drug bust is more than just seizing illegal substances—it’s about saving lives and demonstrating a firm commitment to eradicating narcotics trafficking, especially when it involves cross-border networks. The public is also urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
