The hit Netflix series Squid Game is set to conclude its story with the release of the third season on Friday, June 27, 2025. However, the show’s creator and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shared that he is not ready to leave the dark and brutal world he built behind just yet.
Hwang Dong-hyuk Shares Plans for a Possible Spin-Off
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang revealed that he has been thinking about a spin-off project. Unlike a direct sequel, this spin-off would take place between the events of the first and second seasons.
“I have an idea for a continuation — it’s not a sequel, but more like a spin-off. The story would focus on the time gap between season one and two. During this time, Gi-hun could be tracking down the recruiters. I want to show what the recruiters, Captain Park, the officers, or the masked figures were doing during this period, not in the game arena but in their everyday lives,” Hwang explained.
This new perspective would give fans deeper insight into the secretive organization behind the deadly games.
The Story of Seong Gi-hun Will Come to a Close
The main character, Seong Gi-hun (player number 456), is confirmed to have his journey wrapped up by the end of season three. Hwang confirmed that this will be the final chapter for Gi-hun.
However, this does not mean the Squid Game universe is completely closed.
“This is truly the end. But that doesn’t mean I am shutting the door completely to the possibility of spin-offs or sequels. Never say never,” he said.
The Creator’s Stressful Experience Behind the Scenes
Hwang has also previously shared that working on Squid Game was extremely stressful. He lost about ten teeth during production due to the pressure and has yet to replace them with new ones.
