Fans of high-octane action films, get ready—this might be the cinematic reunion you've been waiting for. Joseph Kosinski, the acclaimed director behind Top Gun: Maverick, has revealed an ambitious idea: bringing Hollywood heavyweights Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise back together in a crossover film that merges two adrenaline-fueled racing worlds—Formula 1 and the classic Days of Thunder.

A Crossover Movie Combining Formula 1 and Days of Thunder

Kosinski envisions a storyline where Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt’s character in Formula 1) discovers a shared history with Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise’s role in Days of Thunder). The narrative could reveal that these two characters were once rivals on the racetrack, perhaps even having crossed paths during their earlier racing careers.

Kosinski hinted at the idea, saying it would be fascinating if “Cole Trickle learns that he and Sonny Hayes have a common past. Maybe they were competitors back in the day.”

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise Have Shared the Screen Before

While a Brad Pitt–Tom Cruise collaboration might sound like a dream team-up today, it’s not the first time they’ve worked together. The two A-listers co-starred in the 1994 gothic horror film Interview with the Vampire. At the time, Cruise was already an established star, while Pitt was just rising in the Hollywood ranks.

Interestingly, a behind-the-scenes rumor from that film says the two engaged in a go-kart race after filming one day. That alone raises the stakes for seeing them go head-to-head again—this time on a full-fledged race track, in a movie with major cinematic backing.

Joseph Kosinski's Proven Track Record with Blockbuster Films

Kosinski’s track record speaks for itself. Beyond directing Top Gun: Maverick, he also helmed the sci-fi action movie Oblivion in 2013, which starred Tom Cruise alongside Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, and Morgan Freeman. Most recently, he directed the Formula 1 film with Brad Pitt, a project that has gained massive attention for its immersive approach to capturing real racing action.

Days of Thunder Sequel Is Reportedly in Development

Adding more fuel to the fire, reports surfaced in November that a sequel to Days of Thunder is already in early development. If Kosinski’s crossover concept becomes reality, we could finally see Pitt and Cruise share the screen again—this time in a turbo-charged, emotional, and action-packed racing film with legacy appeal.

A crossover between Formula 1 and Days of Thunder has the potential to be one of the most exciting racing films in decades—not just for the action sequences, but also because of the rare reunion of two of Hollywood’s most iconic stars. If you're a fan of either actor, or just love thrilling motorsport movies, this is definitely a film to watch for.
