A traffic accident involving a vehicle carrying the Free Nutritious Meal program MBG that crashed into students and a teacher at SDN Kalibaru 01 in Cilincing North Jakarta has now been clarified. The North Jakarta Metro Police revealed that the accident on Friday December 12 2025 occurred due to negligence by the driver identified as AI who was suspected of driving while severely sleep deprived. The morning incident injured 21 students and one teacher raising serious public concern about the safety standards of MBG distribution.

North Jakarta Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Erick Frendriz said the investigation showed the driver was not in a fit condition to operate the vehicle while delivering MBG packages from the SPPG distribution center to several schools. According to police findings AI only fell asleep around 4.00 a.m. and rested for approximately one and a half hours before resuming duty. Despite the lack of rest the driver began the delivery route at around 5.30 a.m.

Erick explained that insufficient rest was a key factor behind the loss of concentration that led to the crash in front of SDN Kalibaru 01. He emphasized that this finding is critical because MBG vehicles operate in public spaces and are closely connected to the safety of schoolchildren. The police chief stressed that a driver’s physical and mental condition is essential to ensure the safe distribution of nutritious meals across North Jakarta.

As a result of the negligence that caused serious injuries to multiple victims AI has been charged under Article 360 of the Indonesian Criminal Code concerning negligence resulting in serious injury carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Investigators are also examining whether there was negligence on the part of the MBG distribution organizers particularly regarding driver working hours and mandatory health and fitness checks before duty. At the same time assistance and support for victims and their families are being provided by the local government and school authorities to ensure both physical and psychological recovery.

At present injured victims are still receiving medical treatment at several nearby health facilities. The North Jakarta City Administration is reportedly conducting a comprehensive evaluation of MBG distribution procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The public hopes stricter safety regulations will be enforced for drivers and vehicles especially since the MBG program is designed to support the health and wellbeing of schoolchildren.
