A tragic incident claimed the life of a 16-year-old teenage girl identified as GS in Dusun Bidangan, Serambai Jaya Village, Mukok District, Sanggau Regency, on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) at approximately 6:00 PM local time. The victim reportedly died after being electrocuted at home while attempting to use a washing machine to dry her school uniform.
Mukok Police Chief, AKP Ambril, confirmed the incident. According to his statement, the event began when the victim was washing her school clothes manually, as part of her daily routine. After finishing, she planned to dry the clothes using a washing machine inside the house.
Based on information provided by the victim’s mother, identified as YI, GS retrieved a power strip located near the refrigerator. While attempting to unplug the refrigerator from the extension outlet, she was allegedly electrocuted.
“The mother was in the front room caring for a baby with a relative. The victim routinely washed her school clothes every afternoon,” AKP Ambril explained.
Shortly afterward, a relative identified as EW was asked to help clean the baby. While passing through the middle room carrying the baby, EW found GS lying on the floor and immediately called the mother.
In a state of panic, the mother rushed to the scene and briefly touched her daughter’s body. She felt an electric current and quickly pulled out the plug from the power strip attached to a kitchen support beam.
Police stated that the victim’s hand was still holding the power strip and was wet with soap suds. Investigators suspect that her wet hands significantly increased the risk of electrocution.
After the electricity was disconnected, the family sought help from neighbors and contacted medical personnel. Dr. Zeni Anzona, who arrived at the scene, declared the victim deceased.
Mukok Police officers conducted a crime scene investigation. Initial findings revealed that the power strip was damaged, with a hole on its side. The cable used was also suspected of not meeting national safety standards.
Authorities found signs consistent with electric shock injuries, including peeling skin on the right palm, bluish discoloration around the neck, and burn marks on the face. No signs of physical violence were discovered.
Police confirmed the incident was purely a household accident caused by electrical shock.
AKP Ambril urged the public to exercise caution when using electrical appliances, especially near water sources. Parents are advised to supervise children when operating electrical devices and ensure that cables and outlets meet safety standards.
“Always make sure your hands are dry before handling electrical equipment, replace damaged cables immediately, and keep electrical installations away from water. Family safety must come first,” he emphasized.
This heartbreaking tragedy serves as a powerful reminder that minor negligence in handling electricity at home can lead to fatal consequences. Public awareness about electrical safety remains crucial to preventing similar incidents.
