Indonesian Police Detain PT SHC Director Over Illegal Cyanide Import in Surabaya. |
Jakarta – The Directorate of Certain Crimes (Dittipidter) of the Indonesian National Police (Bareskrim Polri) has officially detained SE, the Director of PT SHC, for allegedly importing and distributing cyanide illegally through 20 shipping containers in Surabaya, East Java.
“We have examined the suspect today and have proceeded with the detention. This case involves the suspected illegal import and distribution of cyanide,” said Brigadier General Nunung Syaifuddin, Director of Dittipidter, during a press conference at National Police Headquarters on Wednesday (May 14, 2025).
According to Brig. Gen. Nunung, only two companies are officially licensed by the government to import cyanide: PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI) and PT Sarinah, both of which are state-owned enterprises.
“Importing cyanide requires a special permit from the Ministry of Trade, and only those two companies are authorized,” he added.
The police are now expanding the investigation to track the recipients and the suppliers of the illegal cyanide. Early findings show that many of the suppliers are located in Eastern Indonesia.
“We will follow up on the recipients and suppliers. Most of the suppliers are based in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and Central Kalimantan,” Brig. Gen. Nunung revealed.
The case has raised serious concerns, as cyanide is a highly toxic chemical that must be tightly regulated. The Indonesian Police emphasized their commitment to cracking down on any illegal handling of hazardous materials.
