Jakarta – During his state visit to Indonesia, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome from the Indonesian government and people. Speaking at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Macron emphasized that Indonesia and France share similar views on many important global matters.

“I want to sincerely thank President Prabowo and the people of Indonesia for the incredible welcome we have received since this morning,” Macron said warmly at the start of his remarks.

United on Sovereignty and International Law

President Macron highlighted that both Indonesia and France have aligned perspectives on respecting national sovereignty, upholding international law, and rejecting double standards. He also reiterated France’s firm stance regarding the conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crises in Palestine and Israel.

Macron praised Indonesia’s active role in promoting peace efforts, emphasizing President Prabowo’s clear commitment and willingness to engage.

“I thank President Prabowo for his clear commitment and collaborative spirit,” Macron added.

Invitation to Collaborate on Ocean Issues

On international cooperation, Macron stressed the importance of protecting the world’s oceans. He invited Indonesia to participate in the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, offering a great opportunity to strengthen maritime collaboration between the two nations.

“We must work hand in hand, especially on ocean-related issues that are increasingly vital,” he said.

Strategic Cooperation in Defense and Energy Transition

Macron welcomed progress in strategic defense cooperation between Indonesia and France, including military equipment development. He also emphasized the importance of supply chain resilience and the transition to clean energy.

“France stands ready to support Indonesia’s energy transition. We have committed 450 million euros out of a 500 million euro package through ASEAN, including important projects in solar and hydrogen energy,” Macron explained.

Expanding Cultural, Educational, and Investment Ties

Macron also mentioned ongoing plans to expand cooperation in education and culture. He hopes this partnership will grow to cover many sectors, including increasing Indonesian investment in France.

“I am confident our cooperation can extend to various fields, including those that directly impact people’s daily lives,” he said.

Support for Indonesia’s Nutrition Program and Trade Deal

Macron expressed full support for two key Indonesian initiatives: the free nutritious meals program for school children and the completion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). He sees these as vital steps toward a fairer and more balanced future for both sides.

France Stands with Indonesia

Closing his statement, Macron emphasized a simple but powerful message: despite the distance, France stands firmly with Indonesia. He sees both countries sharing the same vision for a just and balanced world order.

“My message is clear: France is on Indonesia’s side. We share the same ideas about the world,” Macron stressed.

As a final gesture, Macron extended a special invitation to President Prabowo to attend Bastille Day celebrations in Paris on July 14. He hopes Indonesian Armed Forces will join the parade alongside French troops as honored guests.

The meeting between President Macron and President Prabowo is more than symbolic. Their aligned strategic views create a strong foundation for long-term cooperation in defense, clean energy, culture, and education. This is great news for bilateral relations and the people of both nations.
