Surabaya – East Java Police’s Highway Patrol Unit (PJR), in collaboration with the East Java Provincial National Narcotics Agency (BNNP Jatim), successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle seven kilograms of methamphetamine on the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road, Saturday, May 10.

The operation began following a tip-off from BNNP Jatim about a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics. According to AKBP Hendrix Kusuma Wardhana, Head of East Java Police’s Highway Patrol, the joint team immediately launched a roadblock based on the information.

“We received the intel from BNNP Jatim on Friday, May 9. It mentioned a vehicle carrying drugs was passing through the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road. We responded quickly and set up a checkpoint,” Hendrix said, as quoted by Antaranews on Wednesday (May 14, 2025).

The roadblock was set up at the Warugunung toll gate at around 4:35 AM on Saturday. Officers stopped a suspicious white Isuzu microbus with license plate DK 7214 AB.

Upon inspection, officers discovered seven packages of methamphetamine, totaling seven kilograms, hidden inside a cardboard box beneath a pile of clothes. The drugs were further examined at the PJR Jatim 3 headquarters.

Authorities also arrested a 57-year-old man identified as R, a resident of Gunung Barat hamlet, Waru Barat village, Waru district, Pamekasan, Madura. The suspect is believed to be a drug courier for a Malaysian-based trafficking network.

“The initial report came from public information. After investigating with BNNP Jatim, we managed to stop the target vehicle and found the evidence,” Hendrix explained.

The case is now under further investigation by BNNP Jatim to uncover the broader network behind the smuggling attempt. Police and BNNP officials praised the public for their role in providing crucial information.

“We’ll keep working with BNNP to uncover the full network behind this. Public involvement is vital in our fight against drug trafficking in East Java,” Hendrix concluded.
