70 Human Trafficking Victims Rescued in North Sumatra: Police Reinforce Commitment to Migrant Protection. |
Good news from North Sumatra! A total of 70 individuals have been rescued from the grip of human trafficking, thanks to the swift action by the North Sumatra Police (Polda Sumut). Authorities have also confirmed that 10 suspects have been arrested in connection with this case.
According to the North Sumatra Police Director of General Crime, Police Commissioner Ricko Taruna Mauruh, the operation didn't just uncover a human trafficking ring—it also revealed five cases of non-procedural Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).
“In total, 70 victims were rescued. That includes 42 men, 26 women, and 2 young girls,” Ricko stated in an official press release on Friday, June 20, 2025.
This shocking revelation highlights how trafficking networks still pose a serious threat, especially for those seeking work abroad through illegal or unsafe channels.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Dr. Nurul Azizah, Director of the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Human Trafficking, emphasized that this case proves the strong commitment of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to national priorities.
“What we’re sharing today isn’t just data—it’s a clear sign that the state is present, taking action, and protecting its people,” Brig. Gen. Nurul said.
The rescue operation aligns with President Joko Widodo’s Asta Cita national program via the Desk for Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (Desk P2MI), which aims to provide full protection for Indonesian migrant workers while fighting against human trafficking.
She also extended her deep appreciation to the North Sumatra Police for their outstanding work. “We highly appreciate their efforts. This proves that law enforcement takes human trafficking seriously and is willing to go the extra mile to protect vulnerable communities,” she added.
This case serves as a powerful reminder that safeguarding citizens—especially migrant workers—is more important than ever. If you or someone you know is planning to work abroad, always go through legal and official channels. It’s the best way to ensure safety and avoid falling victim to trafficking schemes.
Let’s help raise awareness so more people can stay informed and protected. The government is here—and taking action—for you.
