A horrifying attack shook the village of Lambera in Yugumoak District, Puncak Regency, Central Papua. An armed separatist group (KKB) led by Kalenak Murib stormed the village, killing three civilians, injuring four others, and setting at least 11 traditional Papuan houses (honai) on fire. The attack took place on Tuesday afternoon, June 17, 2025, around 4 PM local time.

Brig. Gen. Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, the head of Operation Peace Cartenz, condemned the incident as a gross violation of human rights that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

“This was a barbaric act targeting innocent civilians. We won’t stay silent. Operation Peace Cartenz will continue to pursue and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stated on Friday (June 20, 2025).

A Personal Motive Behind the Massacre

According to eyewitnesses and initial investigations, the attack was triggered by a personal issue. Kalenak Murib was reportedly enraged after discovering his third wife was having an affair with one of his subordinates, Minanggen Wijangge. Overcome with fury, Kalenak entered the village of Lambera carrying four long-barreled firearms.

In a fit of rage, he unleashed violence on innocent villagers. The consequences were devastating—lives lost, people injured, and homes reduced to ashes, leaving deep scars in the hearts of the survivors.

Residents Forced to Flee

Fearing for their safety, most of the villagers fled to nearby safer areas. The majority of Lambera residents are now seeking shelter in Megeabume and Sinak Districts, waiting for the situation to stabilize.

“People chose to evacuate rather than risk their lives staying in an unsafe village,” Faizal explained.

Police Still Chasing the Attackers

Operation Peace Cartenz confirmed that the search for Kalenak Murib and his group is ongoing. Combined forces from the police and military have been deployed to track down and deal firmly with the suspects under applicable law.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing instability in some regions of Papua and the urgent need for coordinated action to restore peace and protect civilians. The state must not allow violence to triumph.

The brutal attack by KKB in Puncak isn’t just another violent incident—it’s a serious crime against humanity. No personal conflict can justify such a deadly and destructive rampage. There is strong public hope that law enforcement will swiftly capture those responsible and bring a sense of safety back to the affected communities.
