Pontianak, Indonesia – The Provincial Government of West Kalimantan (Pemprov Kalbar) is taking significant action in addressing climate change by forming a strategic partnership with the Government of Germany through the Green Climate Fund (GCF). This collaboration aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect vital forest areas in the region.

In a recent meeting, West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan welcomed representatives from the German Embassy to strengthen the ongoing cooperation. Oliver Hope, Advisor to the German Embassy in Indonesia, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to support West Kalimantan’s climate programs.

“This initiative originally came from West Kalimantan itself. We are here as a supporting partner to help implement the vision,” said Oliver during an audience with the governor on Thursday (June 18, 2025).

Germany’s Concrete Support through the Green Climate Fund

Germany, one of the largest contributors to the Green Climate Fund, is providing both financial and technical assistance to West Kalimantan. Through its Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany has committed a grant worth approximately IDR 1 trillion (EUR 59.5 million).

This funding will be used for:

  • Sustainable forest management initiatives

  • Conservation efforts

  • Empowerment programs for forest-dwelling communities

According to Oliver, the collaboration focuses not only on direct carbon reduction but also on building systems and institutional capacity to ensure long-term climate goals.

“We want to help West Kalimantan establish strong foundations—policies, systems, and governance structures—that support long-term emission reduction targets,” Oliver explained.

West Kalimantan Set to Be a Climate Action Model Province

Governor Ria Norsan expressed deep appreciation for the support from the German government and emphasized West Kalimantan's firm commitment to environmental preservation.

“We are fully committed to reducing emissions and improving environmental sustainability. This cooperation with Germany is a valuable opportunity for West Kalimantan to play a stronger role in global climate efforts,” he stated.

The initial implementation phase of this program is expected to begin in August 2025, following further discussions with the central government.

Dual Impact: Greener Environment, Stronger Communities

This partnership not only targets forest preservation but also aims to enhance the well-being of local communities. The GCF grant will support training programs, access to sustainable resources, and economic empowerment for those living near forested areas.

By combining environmental goals with community development, West Kalimantan is setting an example of inclusive and sustainable progress.

The West Kalimantan–Germany partnership through the Green Climate Fund shows how local action backed by international cooperation can generate real environmental and social impact. With this initiative, West Kalimantan is ready to become a national role model for climate adaptation and emission reduction.
