If you’re still running macOS Big Sur on your Mac, it’s time to pay attention. Google just confirmed that starting August 19, 2025, Chrome version 139 will officially stop supporting macOS Big Sur. Yeah, the browser might still open, but you won’t be getting any more updates, not even the crucial security patches.

And that’s a big deal.

No updates mean no new features, no protection against the latest threats, and your browser might start acting weird with newer websites. Basically, you’re putting your Mac—and your personal data—at risk.

To give you some context, Apple launched macOS Big Sur back in November 2020. But in late 2023, it was already considered outdated by Apple. Now Google is following suit, just like they usually do when an operating system loses official support from its creator.

Once Chrome 139 rolls out, users on Big Sur will start seeing pop-up messages asking them to upgrade their macOS to Monterey (macOS 12) or newer. So if you want to keep using Chrome safely and smoothly, updating your OS isn’t optional—it’s necessary.

Why should you care?
Running an outdated system means your Mac is more vulnerable to bugs, crashes, and even security breaches. Plus, some websites and web apps just won’t work properly if your browser’s stuck in the past.

  • Check your macOS version (click the Apple logo > About This Mac).

  • If you're still on Big Sur, start planning your upgrade to Monterey or higher.

  • Make sure you back up your data before updating.

  • If your Mac is too old for the newer OS versions, consider switching to a browser that still supports Big Sur—but just know, that’s only a short-term fix.
