| Netflix Is Making a Live-Action Solo Leveling Series and Fans Are Hyped. |
Get ready, anime and K-drama fans, because Netflix is cooking up something big. The streaming giant has officially started working on a live-action adaptation of the insanely popular Korean webtoon Solo Leveling. And guess what? Byeon Woo-seok, the rising K-drama star from “Twentieth Century Girl” and “Loverly Runner,” is set to play the main role as Sung Jin-Woo.
In case you’re not familiar, Solo Leveling started out as a web novel by Korean author Chugong. It got so popular that it was turned into a full-on manhwa (that’s Korean manga, by the way). The series completely blew up on KakaoPage, racking up more than 14.3 billion views. Yes, billion with a “B.” It's still one of the top titles on the platform, and fans can't get enough of it.
So what’s the story about? Imagine a guy who’s basically the weakest monster hunter out there, always getting the short end of the stick. One day, after barely surviving a deadly dungeon raid, he discovers that he can suddenly level up on his own. No one else has this power, and it turns him into a total beast over time. From a nobody, he becomes one of the strongest hunters and ends up fighting to save humanity.
The series is being directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-soo, names you might know from Korean hits like “The Moon” and “Strong Girl Nam-soon.” Netflix is teaming up with Kakao Entertainment and Sanai Pictures for this one, so you already know they’re going all-in to make sure it’s epic.
No official release date has been shared yet, but considering the anime version of Solo Leveling just dominated the 2024 Crunchyroll Awards with nine wins, including Anime of the Year, expectations are sky-high.
