Wamen Ossy Talks Land and Space Rules: Time to Get Serious About Fair and Sustainable Land Use in Indonesia. |
Yogyakarta – Deputy Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning / Deputy Head of the National Land Agency (Wamen ATR/Waka BPN), Ossy Dermawan, kicked off a major public lecture on Friday, July 11, 2025, at STPN Yogyakarta (National Land College). The event was all about managing land and space in Indonesia the right way—fairly, responsibly, and sustainably.
Speaking online, Wamen Ossy highlighted why this kind of discussion matters in today’s fast-moving development era.
“This forum is super important. It's not just about sharing knowledge, but also about building a strong commitment to fair and sustainable land and spatial governance,” he said.
Why Land and Space Management Is a Big Deal
Let’s be real—land and space are more than just empty plots or city zones. They play a huge role in supporting national development. But here’s the catch: how we manage it is often messy. There's illegal use, abandoned land, poor zoning—you name it.
“We need clear rules and firm policies. Land and space must be used wisely, not wasted,” Wamen Ossy stressed.
He pointed out that sticking to the Spatial Planning Regulations is a must if we want everything to stay organized and productive.
Gov's Game Plan: Simplify the Rules, Speed Up the Process
Director General of PPTR, Jonahar, shared that his office is currently working on tightening spatial control and dealing with abandoned land. A big part of this is revising Government Regulation (PP) No. 20 of 2021.
What’s the goal?
-
Make the process easier and faster.
-
Clearly define what counts as abandoned land.
-
Strengthen authority for enforcement.
This update is expected to speed up land identification and help turn unused land into something productive—like housing, farming, or green space.
Packed Audience and Star Speakers
The event wasn’t low-key. It gathered over a thousand participants from all walks of life—local government reps, lecturers, and students from UGM and STPN, plus the general public.
Sri Yanti Achmad, head of STPN, hoped the event would open minds and inspire action.
“We want this to be more than just a lecture. It’s about building awareness and professionalism in handling land issues,” she said.
The panel session brought together top speakers, led by Ariodilah Virgantara, Secretary of the Directorate General of PPTR. Here’s the all-star lineup:
-
Prof. Maria Sumardjono, Agrarian Law Professor from UGM
-
Aria Indra Purnama, Director of Spatial Use Control
-
Agus Sutanto, Director of Space Utilization Enforcement
-
Sepyo Achanto, Director of Land Use and Ownership Control
-
Elsa Puspita, Head of Land Conversion Control Sub-Directorate
This wasn’t just another lecture—it was a wake-up call. Indonesia needs to start managing its land and space with purpose and fairness. No more land wasting, no more zoning chaos.
With government reforms, academic input, and public support, we’re on track to build a system that’s just, smart, and future-ready.
