Gus Dur’s Legacy in Police Reform
KH Abdurrahman Wahid served as Indonesia’s fourth president from October 20, 1999, to July 23, 2001. During his administration, several reform initiatives were pursued, including efforts to strengthen the professionalism of state institutions.
One of the most important milestones of his presidency was the separation of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri). The move was formalized through People’s Consultative Assembly Decree No. VI of 2000 on the Separation of TNI and Polri and Decree No. VII of 2000 concerning the Roles of TNI and Polri.
The policy became a cornerstone of Indonesia’s security sector reform, aimed at clarifying the roles of defense and internal security institutions in accordance with democratic principles and civilian supremacy.
Remembering Gus Dur’s Values of Tolerance
Beyond his role as president, Gus Dur is remembered for his unwavering commitment to pluralism, diversity, and interfaith harmony. His ideas and principles continue to inspire various sectors of society, including law enforcement institutions.
Values such as public service, respect for differences, and national unity remain relevant and continue to guide Indonesia’s democratic development.
Reflection Ahead of the 80th Bhayangkara Day
The pilgrimage to Gus Dur’s grave is one of several activities organized by the Indonesian National Police ahead of the 80th Bhayangkara Day celebration. Through these events, the institution seeks to honor the legacy of national leaders while reinforcing its commitment to public service, protection, and law enforcement.
This year’s Bhayangkara Day serves not only as a commemoration of the police institution’s anniversary but also as an opportunity to reflect on the reform journey and strengthen professionalism amid evolving challenges.
