| Brahim Díaz, The New Face of Moroccan Football Ready to Light Up Africa. |
Moroccan football is enjoying a remarkable rise, and the progress is impossible to ignore. Heavy investment in infrastructure, strong youth development, and support from a large Moroccan diaspora across Europe have created real momentum. At the heart of this new era stands one name that truly represents it all: Brahim Díaz.
Hosting this year’s Africa Cup of Nations is only the beginning. Morocco has also been awarded the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and will co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. What’s happening off the pitch perfectly reflects the success unfolding on it.
The world saw Morocco make history at the 2022 World Cup by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals. Now, they enter AFCON as one of the strongest title contenders. If Morocco go all the way, Brahim Díaz will be a major reason why.
At club level, Díaz hasn’t always enjoyed center stage. Breaking into Real Madrid’s attack is no easy task with stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham competing for spots. Even so, his numbers tell a positive story. Under Carlo Ancelotti, Díaz recorded 18 goals and 14 assists in 96 appearances, most of them coming off the bench.
His opportunities became even more limited during Xabi Alonso’s tenure before the coach was dismissed. Díaz started just three of his 12 La Liga matches, registering two assists. With regular minutes hard to come by, a change was inevitable.
Although he has Moroccan heritage, Díaz represented Spain at youth level and even made a senior appearance in 2021 during a friendly match. After that, the call never came again. In 2024, Díaz made the bold decision to switch allegiance to Morocco, a move that has paid off in spectacular fashion.
Since joining the Atlas Lions, Díaz has been sensational. He has scored 13 goals in 20 appearances, instantly becoming a key figure. AFCON 2025 marks his first major international tournament with Morocco, and he has embraced the pressure of being the team’s main attacking weapon.
Díaz made history by becoming the first Moroccan player to score in four consecutive AFCON matches. He then added another milestone by opening the scoring in Morocco’s 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Cameroon.
So far, Díaz has arguably been the standout player of the tournament. His five goals place him at the top of the scoring charts, just ahead of Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah, who are close behind with four each. His efficiency is impressive, scoring five goals from just 15 shots, eight of which were on target.
Beyond goals, Díaz contributes tirelessly for the team. He presses aggressively, wins duels, recovers possession, and plays a key role defensively when needed. His performances show that he’s not just a scorer, but a complete modern forward.
His first goal of the tournament came in the opening match against Comoros. Playing under heavy rain in Rabat, Díaz broke the deadlock in the second half and lifted the pressure off the hosts. Against Mali, he once again delivered, calmly converting a penalty, although the match ended in a draw.
Morocco then dominated Zambia, with Díaz continuing his scoring streak. As the calendar turned to 2026 and Morocco faced Tanzania, the story stayed the same. When the team struggled to break down a stubborn defense, Díaz stepped up with a moment of quality.
In the quarterfinal against Cameroon, his sharp instincts made the difference once more. Taking advantage of a defensive lapse, Díaz scored a crucial goal that sent Morocco into the semifinals.
Next up is a huge test against Nigeria. Unlike previous matches, Morocco may not control possession as comfortably and could rely more on counter-attacks. Even so, with Brahim Díaz in this kind of form, don’t be surprised if he finds the net again and continues to cement his status as the new icon of Moroccan football.
