A shocking street crime in Yogyakarta turned into a story of courage after a 21-year-old woman fought back against a phone snatcher — and won.

The incident happened Monday afternoon (Feb. 9, 2026) around 5:00 p.m. local time. The victim, identified as EV, was riding her motorbike toward a shop on Jalan Menteri Supeno when things suddenly took a dangerous turn.

As she passed a hotel along the road, a man on another motorbike pulled up close beside her. Within seconds, he grabbed her cellphone from the left storage compartment of her bike and sped off.

But instead of freezing in fear, EV did something unexpected.

She immediately chased after him, shouting “Thief! Thief!” to alert people nearby. What followed was a dramatic pursuit through the busy street.

Near SD Muhammadiyah Pakel, EV made a bold decision. She deliberately rammed her motorbike into the suspect’s vehicle. The impact knocked the snatcher off balance, sending him crashing to the ground.

Fortunately, EV did not suffer serious injuries. Local residents quickly stepped in, apprehended the suspect, and held him until authorities arrived.

This incident highlights two important realities: street theft remains a real threat, especially when valuables are placed in easy-to-reach compartments, and quick thinking can sometimes change the outcome.

While EV’s bravery is being praised, safety experts still remind riders to prioritize personal safety first. If you ever become a victim of theft, alert others immediately and contact law enforcement as soon as possible.

This isn’t just another phone snatching case — it’s a powerful reminder that courage can make a difference.

Would you have done the same?
