| Chaos at SMPN 3 Sungai Raya: Molotov Cocktail Attack Shocks School, Police Secure Suspected Perpetrator. |
A normally calm school day at SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Raya, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, suddenly turned tense. On Tuesday at around 10:40 a.m., a Molotov cocktail was thrown inside the school area, triggering an immediate response from law enforcement.
The Kubu Raya Police Department is still investigating the motive behind the attack, while specialized teams continue working to ensure the situation is fully under control.
Deputy Chief of Kubu Raya Police, Commissioner Andri Syahroni, confirmed that officers swiftly arrived at the scene and conducted a crime scene investigation together with the West Kalimantan Police Forensic Laboratory and the Inafis identification team.
“Yes, the incident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. at SMPN 3 Sungai Raya. Our forensic and identification teams are currently processing the crime scene,” Andri told reporters on Tuesday.
Following the incident, police secured the school area and detained the suspected perpetrator to prevent any further disturbances that could endanger students or school staff.
Authorities stated that the suspect is currently being held at the Sungai Raya Police Post and is undergoing intensive questioning. However, police emphasized that conclusions regarding the motive are still premature.
“The individual believed to be responsible has been secured. We are still conducting a thorough investigation to determine the motive and background of this incident,” Andri explained.
Preliminary information suggests the suspect may be a student at the same school, although police stressed that this detail has not yet been officially confirmed.
“At this stage, the suspect is believed to be a student. As for whether this incident is linked to terrorism or other extremist motives, it does not appear to be the case at this time,” he added.
Earlier, Police Public Relations Officer Aiptu Ade revealed that the suspect entered the school grounds and threw a bottle containing flammable liquid, causing sparks and thick smoke.
Thanks to the quick response from school staff and nearby residents, the fire was extinguished almost immediately, preventing it from spreading to classrooms or main buildings.
“There were no casualties. The situation was handled swiftly and safely,” Ade confirmed.
Officers from Sungai Raya Police Station immediately secured the area, while the Criminal Investigation Unit’s Inafis team collected evidence to support the ongoing investigation.
Police assured the public that security at the school has been restored, and teaching and learning activities continue as usual, with officers maintaining close supervision to ensure safety.
In closing, Commissioner Andri urged the community—especially parents and teachers—to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
“We ask the public to stay calm and verify any information circulating online. Please trust the police to handle this case professionally. Official updates will be shared once the forensic and investigative processes are complete,” he concluded.
