| Prabowo Subianto instructed BPKP to continue investigating officials close to him if there are indications of violations during an event in Nganjuk. |
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed that the head of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP) once approached him hesitantly over an investigation involving several officials allegedly linked to misconduct because they were known to be close to the President. Prabowo made the statement during an event in Nglundo Village, Sukomoro District, Nganjuk Regency, on Saturday (May 16, 2026).
Prabowo said the BPKP chief appeared nervous while reporting the matter because the individuals under investigation were considered close to him.
“He came to me trembling a little because the people being reported were known to be close to me,” Prabowo said.
According to Prabowo, the BPKP chief asked whether the investigation should continue given the personal connections involved.
However, Prabowo stressed that no investigation should be halted if there are indications of wrongdoing.
“Continue the investigation. Do not stop. Whether they are Prabowo’s people or not, whether they are close to me or not, it does not matter. If there are indications, keep investigating,” he said.
Prabowo also reminded public officials to be more careful in carrying out their duties and not abuse the authority entrusted to them.
He said he was surprised that corruption attempts still occur in the digital era, when technological advances make misconduct easier to detect.
“I am surprised that nowadays there are still people trying to commit corruption. Everything is digital now, it will be exposed,” he added.
Although he supports firm law enforcement, Prabowo admitted he feels saddened whenever reports of abuse of office emerge.
According to him, corruption harms not only the state but also the families of those involved, including their children and spouses.
“Once you hold a state position, your responsibility is to the country and the people,” Prabowo said.
