West Kalimantan Governor Urges Airlines to Accelerate New International Routes, AirAsia Leads the Way. |
Pontianak – The West Kalimantan Provincial Government is taking concrete steps to improve international air connectivity to support regional economic growth and ease travel for its citizens. On Monday (June 23, 2025), West Kalimantan Governor Drs. H. Ria Norsan, M.M., M.H. welcomed representatives from AirAsia Indonesia-Malaysia’s Government Relations Division at the Governor’s Residence in Pontianak.
During the meeting, Governor Norsan expressed his appreciation for AirAsia’s efforts in reopening international flight routes from Pontianak and highlighted the importance of continuing to expand these connections.
"Thank you to AirAsia for reopening international flights from Pontianak. Hopefully, other airlines will soon follow. This will make it easier for West Kalimantan residents to travel abroad and for foreign tourists to visit our region," said Norsan.
Fast-Tracking Flight Permits for Quicker Launch
Currently, AirAsia serves the Pontianak–Kuching and Pontianak–Kuala Lumpur routes round-trip. However, the government is actively working to open additional routes to Penang and Singapore.
Originally scheduled for launch in September, the Governor is pushing for an earlier timeline. He hopes that all necessary permits can be expedited so that these new routes can begin operating by August 17, 2025, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day.
“We’re requesting that the permits be finalized ahead of schedule. God willing, by mid-August the flights will be ready to take off,” Norsan said.
Supadio Airport’s Role as an International Gateway
This push for new international routes aligns with the recent upgrade of Supadio Airport to international status. While the status has already been inaugurated, improvements and renovations at the airport are still ongoing to enhance passenger experience and meet global standards.
“We want our people to travel internationally without having to go through Jakarta. Departing directly from Pontianak will save time and money,” the Governor added.
Boosting Tourism, Trade, and Regional Connectivity
International flights from Pontianak are expected to not only benefit local travelers but also enhance tourism, trade, and investment opportunities in West Kalimantan. With easier access to the region, West Kalimantan’s natural and cultural attractions could draw more attention from international visitors and businesses.
The Provincial Government is committed to working closely with airlines and national authorities to ensure these routes are implemented smoothly and sustained long-term.
The West Kalimantan Governor's initiative to accelerate international flight routes marks a pivotal step toward enhancing mobility and boosting the regional economy. With routes already active and more on the horizon, Pontianak is well on its way to becoming a key international hub in western Indonesia.
