Pontianak, July 22, 2025 — The streets of Pontianak were filled with determination today as around 300 people from the West Kalimantan People’s Alliance for Justice gathered at Rumah Betang Dayak, a traditional Dayak longhouse on Sutoyo Street. The peaceful demonstration was held to protest the national transmigration policy, which they believe marginalizes the rights of local communities in West Kalimantan.

Led by field coordinator Rendro Ronianus, the protesters marched to three major government offices: the West Kalimantan Governor’s Office, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), and the West Kalimantan Regional Police Headquarters (Mapolda Kalbar), chanting and carrying banners peacefully.

Why Are They Rejecting Transmigration?

The protesters argue that the current transmigration policy is unfair to indigenous communities. Many feel their ancestral lands and cultural rights are being neglected or even threatened by the program. They also fear long-term social and cultural impacts that could disrupt the harmony of the region.

“This isn’t about rejecting newcomers. It’s about ensuring that government policies truly protect the local people and their rights,” said one protester during the march.

480 Personnel Deployed, Protest Stays Peaceful

To ensure public safety, Pontianak Police Chief Kombes Pol Suyono, S.I.K., S.H., M.H., personally led the security team. A total of 480 combined personnel from various police units and related agencies were deployed.

“We’re here to provide maximum security in a respectful and persuasive manner. But we won’t tolerate any unlawful or anarchic actions,” the Police Chief emphasized.

Traffic Controlled, No Major Disruptions

Even with hundreds of protesters marching through main roads, traffic in Pontianak remained under control. Police officers were stationed at key intersections to guide traffic flow, prevent congestion, and ensure safety for all road users.

The demonstration ended without incident. Protest coordinator Rendro Ronianus expressed his gratitude to the security forces for their professionalism and respectful approach.

“We truly appreciate how the police supported this peaceful protest. Our voices were heard without any form of intimidation or violence,” Rendro said after the event concluded.
