Shooting may not be as popular as soccer or badminton in Indonesia, but it holds a unique charm. It’s not just about pulling the trigger—it’s about concentration, discipline, physical control, and emotional balance. This was the core message delivered by the Governor of West Kalimantan, Drs. H. Ria Norsan, M.M., M.H., during his attendance at a shooting competition held at the Rahmat Indoor Pistol Shooting Range at Kodam XII/Tanjungpura on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The event, organized to commemorate the 67th anniversary of Kodam XII/Tanjungpura, was attended by various regional leaders and the Regent of Kubu Raya, Sujiwo. More than just a competitive event, it served as a platform to strengthen ties within the local shooting community and highlight the sport’s value in personal development.

Shooting: A Sport of Precision and Responsibility

Governor Norsan emphasized that shooting is a sport that requires not just physical strength—particularly in the upper body—but also a high level of focus and mental stability. Despite its valuable benefits, shooting remains relatively unknown and underappreciated by the general public.

“This sport relies heavily on body control and the ability to concentrate. It’s a great way to train self-discipline and emotional maturity,” he stated.

He went on to explain that, since shooting involves dangerous equipment, it demands a high sense of responsibility, consistent training, and a mature attitude. It's also crucial for participants to maintain strong and respectful relationships with their community to ensure overall safety.

Shooting Is for Everyone, Not Just Elite Athletes

The West Kalimantan Provincial Government fully supports events like this. Governor Norsan believes that shooting competitions are not only meant for achieving medals but also for introducing the sport to a wider audience and encouraging public involvement.

“This event does not just build achievements among athletes and shooting clubs—it also serves as a tool to popularize shooting sports in West Kalimantan,” he explained.

He hopes more young people will become interested in shooting—not only for competition, but as a way to build personal character and life skills that go far beyond the range.

From West Kalimantan to the Nation—and the World

West Kalimantan already has a track record of producing talented shooting athletes. At the 2021 PON XX in Papua, athlete Andrean proudly brought home a bronze medal. More recently, in the 2023 Kasau Cup, young shooter Muhammad Arvin Rajendra Hafizh earned first place in the Junior Production Division and second place in the Grade C Production category.

These victories are proof that West Kalimantan has the talent and potential to compete on the national stage and even reach international levels. Events like this anniversary celebration are the perfect space to uncover more rising stars in the world of shooting.

Combining Sportsmanship with Community Bonding

Governor Norsan also highlighted the importance of unity and friendship built through this competition. Beyond the medals and rankings, the event fostered a spirit of togetherness between military personnel, local authorities, athletes, and the public.

“Apart from chasing achievements, this competition is also a valuable moment to strengthen friendship and cooperation. It shows how sports can be part of community development and contribute to the bigger picture of our nation’s progress,” he said.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Shooting Sports in West Kalimantan

In closing, Governor Norsan shared his hopes for shooting sports in the region. He wants this event to be more than just an annual competition—it should be a turning point for elevating shooting sports as a regional and even national force.

“This shooting competition, held in celebration of Kodam XII’s 67th anniversary, should be seen as a new starting point. We need to organize and strengthen our sports achievements so that West Kalimantan can become a leading force not only nationally but internationally as well,” he added.

He also mentioned that the sport could become part of West Kalimantan’s contribution to the sports industry and national identity, especially as it continues to produce athletes who shine on national stages.

Shooting is more than just a hobby or a niche sport. It builds discipline, focus, and maturity. With strong support from the regional government and growing interest from the public, West Kalimantan is on the path to becoming a powerhouse in shooting sports.

Events like these don’t just highlight talent; they also foster unity, pride, and passion for a sport that deserves more recognition. If nurtured properly, shooting can become a source of pride and accomplishment for Indonesia—starting from West Kalimantan.

So, who says shooting is only for a select few? It's time we appreciate it for what it truly is: a powerful tool for personal growth and national achievement.
