Protect West Kalimantan from Hoaxes: Governor Ria Norsan Urges Public to Support Quality Broadcasting and Be Media-Wise. |
In today’s fast-paced digital world, where information floods in from all directions, Governor of West Kalimantan, Drs. H. Ria Norsan, M.M., M.H., reminds everyone how crucial it is to filter the content we consume. This important message was delivered as he officially opened the KPID Awards 2025 at the Garuda Hall, West Kalimantan Governor’s Office, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The event served not just as a ceremonial gathering but as a meaningful platform to honor broadcast media institutions that consistently deliver high-quality, educational, and inspiring content to the public. It also highlighted the growing need to monitor and regulate what we see and hear in the media, especially amid the ever-growing wave of digital information.
Media's True Role: More Than Just Entertainment
During his speech, Governor Norsan emphasized the vital role of the West Kalimantan Regional Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPID), as mandated by Law Number 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting. As an independent institution, KPID has the responsibility to ensure the delivery of dignified and ethical broadcast content across the province.
“KPID's role goes beyond simply issuing sanctions for programs that violate broadcasting guidelines. They also play a key part in recognizing and encouraging outstanding programs. This motivates broadcasters to keep innovating and offering content that educates, informs, and entertains the people of West Kalimantan,” he explained.
Traditional Media vs. Social Media: A Critical Difference
Governor Norsan also pointed out the difference between conventional broadcast media like radio and television, and the often unchecked flow of content on social media.
“Thankfully, radio and television are still well-regulated and monitored. But social media is a whole different story. It often escapes supervision and can easily become a platform for spreading harmful or even slanderous content,” he stressed.
He made it clear that all media channels—whether traditional or digital—carry a serious responsibility as the public’s source of information.
The Importance of Quality Media in Public Education
Governor Norsan underlined the need for media to act as a tool for education, not just for ratings or sensationalism. In a separate interview, he voiced his full support for KPID and their mission to keep the public well-informed.
“Media should help people understand what’s really happening in West Kalimantan. That’s the goal—whether through television, radio, or newspapers,” he said.
He believes that delivering real, fact-based news is essential to help citizens make informed decisions and understand the true situation around them.
A Call to Use Social Media Wisely
Before closing his speech, Governor Norsan took the opportunity to urge the public to be more cautious and responsible when using technology, especially social media.
“Technology is like a knife. If used properly, it can be very helpful. But if used carelessly, it can be dangerous. I encourage all West Kalimantan residents to be more mindful when consuming and sharing information online,” he said firmly.
He emphasized that digital literacy is now more important than ever, so that in the future, Indonesians can avoid becoming victims of misinformation and fake news.
“If we all practice responsible media habits, we’re not only protecting ourselves, but also contributing to a healthier future for the nation,” he added.
KPID Awards 2025: Not Just an Award, But a Movement
The KPID Awards 2025 is more than just a trophy presentation. It’s a strong reminder of the direction West Kalimantan wants to take in developing a healthier, more ethical media environment. This award serves as motivation for media outlets to push boundaries creatively, while staying rooted in values that benefit the public.
KPID, aside from acting as a watchdog, also nurtures creativity and progress in the broadcasting world. With programs like these, local media is encouraged to continue improving and competing in producing informative and entertaining content.
Building a Smarter West Kalimantan Together
A stronger media ecosystem can only be built through collaboration—between the government, KPID, broadcasters, and the public. Together, they can ensure that what gets broadcasted helps build character, spreads accurate information, and enriches lives.
Through his strong commitment at the KPID Awards 2025, Governor Norsan has reminded us that in today’s digital era, speed of news is not everything. Trustworthiness matters even more.
So let’s do our part. Choose content wisely. Support media that educates. Think before sharing online. Together, we can build a positive digital space and protect West Kalimantan from the flood of misinformation.
