| Tragedy in West Jakarta: Fire Destroys 70 Homes, Leaves 400 Residents Homeless. |
Jakarta – A devastating fire swept through a densely populated neighborhood in Duri Utara, Tambora, West Jakarta, reducing at least 70 homes to ashes and displacing around 100 families—a total of 400 people. By 4:00 PM (WIB), several hotspots were still burning as firefighters continued battling the flames.
The fire reportedly broke out Monday morning in one of the tightly packed houses and spread rapidly due to strong winds and flammable building materials. The intensity of the fire quickly turned it into one of the worst disasters the area has seen in recent years.
Firefighters arrived early and worked tirelessly throughout the day. However, due to the scale of the blaze, they were still trying to extinguish the remaining fire points by late afternoon.
The victims include 100 households, many of whom lost all of their belongings, including important documents. Residents were seen gathering along Jalan Pasar Garuda, salvaging what little they could—some only had the clothes on their backs.
“I lost everything, including my house documents and IDs. We couldn’t save anything,” said one of the victims tearfully.
To support affected residents, the Tambora Police set up a 24-hour emergency post at RW 02 Duri Utara. Victims can report lost documents such as ID cards, family cards, birth certificates, and property papers, and receive official loss certificates right on site.
“We’ve prepared everything here. People just need to come to the post and we’ll help print the necessary documents immediately,” said Tambora Police Chief, Kompol Muhammad Kukuh Islami, in a statement quoted by Antaranews.
The fire started in the early hours of Monday, July 21, 2025, and spread rapidly. Although emergency crews arrived in the morning, the fire’s intensity meant that flames and smoke were still visible by 4:00 PM WIB. Several homes collapsed entirely, while others were left scorched inside and out.
According to on-site reports, the compact layout of homes combined with combustible materials like wood, contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. Strong winds further fueled the flames, making it hard for firefighters to contain the situation in the early hours.
Local authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire, but an investigation is currently underway.
