Sambas, West Kalimantan - Surau Raden Sulaiman in Sebangun Village, which is the most important part of the historical traces and evidence of Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, is now being worked on and is targeted to become a historical and religious tourist destination in the area.

"Now the government of Sebangun Village has formed a restoration committee. Hopefully this will be realized quickly and make Surau Raden Sulaiman accessible to tourists," said Head of Sebangun Village Sarbini when contacted at Sambas, Monday (20/2/2023).

Sarbini explained why Raden Sulaiman Surau became a tourist destination because Raden Sulaiman was the founding figure as well as the first king of Sambas with the title Sultan Muhammad Shafiuddin I.

From various references, he said, Kota Bangun was the first site of Raja Tengah or the father of Raden Sulaiman who founded a village when he first came to Sambas.

"It was in Bangun City that the forerunner to the establishment of the Islamic Sambas Kingdom, the legacy that has existed until now is a surau, the local community named Surau Raden Sulaiman," he said.

It was also explained that the mention of the term sultanate began when Raden Sulaiman was crowned ruler in Sambas with the title Sultan Muhammad Tsafiuddin.  The Sambas Sultanate only started its history at the beginning of the development of Islam since the early 16th century.

He stated that it was hoped that the Pemdes Sebangun with this historical tour could have an economic impact on the community.

In this way, he said, local residents have the opportunity to earn income, for example by making a kind of trinkets and culinary delights typical of Sebangun Village in the form of processed sago as souvenirs for tourists to take home.
