| Certification of 86,000 Oil Palm Seeds in Muara Pawan: A Strategic Step to Strengthen the Future of Farmers’ Plantations. |
Ketapang – As demand for superior oil palm seeds continues to rise to support replanting programs, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the productivity of a plantation over the next 20 to 25 years depends heavily on the quality of the seedlings planted today. Choosing the wrong planting material can lead to long-term losses. That is why seed certification has become a critical step that cannot be overlooked.
Responding to this need, CV Tiga Bintang conducted a main nursery stage certification process for oil palm seedlings in Sungai Awan Kiri Village, Muara Pawan District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan. The activity is part of a broader effort to ensure that planting materials meet official quality standards before reaching farmers.
86,594 Seedlings Submitted for Certification
A total of 86,594 oil palm seedlings were submitted for certification. This significant number includes the DxP Themba, DxP PPKS 540, and DxP Simalungan varieties, all aged between 8 and 9 months and currently in the main nursery phase.
At this stage, vegetative growth becomes clearly visible, making it a crucial period for evaluation. Any oversight during this phase could directly impact productivity once the palms are planted in the field.
For farmers, this process is more than administrative compliance—it is a long-term investment decision.
Thorough Inspection by Official Certification Team
The certification was carried out by a team from the Plantation Seed Supervision and Certification Unit of West Kalimantan Province, consisting of Nugraha Banu Safitri, SP., M.Agr., Putra Diangga Sinaga, SP., and Tagam Manalu, SP., M.M.
The inspection was conducted comprehensively and in accordance with official plantation seed certification standards. The team performed detailed field checks, including counting the number of fronds on sample plants to verify age accuracy and healthy vegetative development.
This method is essential because frond count serves as an indicator of proper growth according to the seedling’s age. Seedlings that do not meet growth benchmarks may pose productivity risks later in their lifecycle.
In addition, the team carefully examined plant health to ensure the seedlings were free from pests and diseases that could compromise genetic quality or future yield performance.
Growing Media and Polybag Standards Also Evaluated
Beyond plant condition, technical aspects such as uniform growth and proper growing media were also assessed. The use of 30 x 40 cm polybags was verified to ensure compliance with standards.
This specification plays an important role in root development. Adequate root space supports stronger and healthier seedlings before they are transplanted into permanent fields. Well-developed root systems allow for better adaptation and resilience once planted.
In short, the certification process ensures that every detail—down to the smallest technical requirement—meets government-established standards.
Why Certified Seeds Matter
More farmers are beginning to understand that plantation productivity does not depend solely on fertilization and maintenance after planting. It starts with the seed.
Certified seeds provide assurance of:
Genetic purity
Verified varietal authenticity
Physical plant quality
Official government supervision
Without certification, the risk of receiving substandard or non-authentic planting material increases significantly. Unfortunately, these issues often become apparent only years later, when the palms begin producing below expectations.
Choosing certified seeds is not an expense—it is protection for the future.
Supporting Oil Palm Productivity in West Kalimantan
This certification activity also supports efforts to boost oil palm productivity in West Kalimantan, one of Indonesia’s major production hubs. Ensuring the availability of high-quality certified seeds locally enables farmers to access reliable planting materials without relying solely on external suppliers.
As the national replanting program continues to expand, the use of superior certified seedlings will play a decisive role in its success. Higher productivity means stronger competitiveness for Indonesia’s plantation sector.
For farmers, replanting is not just about replacing old trees—it is about rebuilding long-term economic security.
Time to Be More Selective
If you are considering replanting your oil palm plantation, now is the right time to prioritize certified superior seedlings. Avoid being tempted by lower prices without clear certification.
While quality seeds may require a higher initial investment, the long-term returns are significantly more promising—stable yields, better oil extraction rates, and lower risk of crop failure.
