West Kalimantan Collaborates with Germany to Reduce Emissions and Boost Sustainable Forest Programs through Green Climate Fund

Pontianak, Indonesia – The Provincial Government of West Kalimantan (Pemprov Kalbar) is taking significant action in addressing climate change by forming a strategic partnership with the Government of Germany through the Green Climate Fund (GCF). This collaboration aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect vital forest areas in the region.

In a recent meeting, West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan welcomed representatives from the German Embassy to strengthen the ongoing cooperation. Oliver Hope, Advisor to the German Embassy in Indonesia, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to support West Kalimantan’s climate programs.

“This initiative originally came from West Kalimantan itself. We are here as a supporting partner to help implement the vision,” said Oliver during an audience with the governor on Thursday (June 18, 2025).

Germany’s Concrete Support through the Green Climate Fund

Germany, one of the largest contributors to the Green Climate Fund, is providing both financial and technical assistance to West Kalimantan. Through its Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany has committed a grant worth approximately IDR 1 trillion (EUR 59.5 million).

This funding will be used for:

  • Sustainable forest management initiatives

  • Conservation efforts

  • Empowerment programs for forest-dwelling communities

According to Oliver, the collaboration focuses not only on direct carbon reduction but also on building systems and institutional capacity to ensure long-term climate goals.

“We want to help West Kalimantan establish strong foundations—policies, systems, and governance structures—that support long-term emission reduction targets,” Oliver explained.

West Kalimantan Set to Be a Climate Action Model Province

Governor Ria Norsan expressed deep appreciation for the support from the German government and emphasized West Kalimantan's firm commitment to environmental preservation.

“We are fully committed to reducing emissions and improving environmental sustainability. This cooperation with Germany is a valuable opportunity for West Kalimantan to play a stronger role in global climate efforts,” he stated.

The initial implementation phase of this program is expected to begin in August 2025, following further discussions with the central government.

Dual Impact: Greener Environment, Stronger Communities

This partnership not only targets forest preservation but also aims to enhance the well-being of local communities. The GCF grant will support training programs, access to sustainable resources, and economic empowerment for those living near forested areas.

By combining environmental goals with community development, West Kalimantan is setting an example of inclusive and sustainable progress.

The West Kalimantan–Germany partnership through the Green Climate Fund shows how local action backed by international cooperation can generate real environmental and social impact. With this initiative, West Kalimantan is ready to become a national role model for climate adaptation and emission reduction.

Pontianak, Indonesia – The Provincial Government of West Kalimantan is showing strong confidence in the potential and achievements of its student-athletes, especially through the 2025 West Kalimantan Regional Student Sports Week (POPDA). This annual event serves not only as a platform for healthy competition but also as a vital selection stage for the National Student Sports Week (POPNAS), the highest-level sports event for students in Indonesia.

Scheduled to take place from June 22 to 26, 2025, in Pontianak, POPDA 2025 gathers participants from 14 cities/regencies across the province, with a total of 525 athletes, coaches, and officials competing in six main sports: athletics, taekwondo, karate, cycling, archery, and wushu. Several other sports, including climbing, weightlifting, swimming, and shooting, will select athletes through regional trials in collaboration with sports federations.

Governor Norsan Encourages Fair Play and Discipline

During the opening ceremony at GOR Pangsuma, Governor Drs. H. Ria Norsan, M.M., M.H. motivated the young athletes, emphasizing the importance of discipline, regular training, and fair play in achieving success.

“Success is in your hands. If you want to achieve great things, be disciplined, train hard, stay healthy, and always compete with honesty and fairness,” said the governor.

He also expressed high hopes for West Kalimantan athletes to perform even better at the upcoming POPNAS in Jakarta this November, building on their impressive performances from previous years.

Strong Performance at National Level Builds Optimism

West Kalimantan achieved an outstanding result during POPNAS 2023 in Palembang, finishing in the top 8 nationally, with 9 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze medals won in sports such as swimming, athletics, weightlifting, cycling, wushu, boxing, pencak silat, and taekwondo.

Additionally, in the Pre-POPNAS Zone II held in Solo in 2024, the West Kalimantan team successfully qualified 35 athletes and coaches in team sports such as basketball, pencak silat, boxing, and women’s badminton for the 2025 POPNAS.

According to Windy Prihastari, S.STP., M.Si, Head of the Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office of West Kalimantan, this success reflects the government’s strong commitment to nurturing young athletic talents in the region.

“This achievement is a direct result of the support and collaboration between the provincial government and all stakeholders in developing West Kalimantan’s youth athletes,” she said.

Incentives for Winners from Provincial and Local Governments

As a form of appreciation, Governor Norsan announced that the provincial government will grant performance bonuses to athletes who win at the national level. He also urged district and city governments to follow suit and reward their own athletes.

“It shouldn’t just be the provincial government giving bonuses. Regional leaders like mayors and regents must also appreciate their athletes,” Norsan emphasized.

POPDA 2025 as a Launchpad for West Kalimantan’s Future Sports Stars

With growing achievements and continuous support, POPDA West Kalimantan 2025 is not just another regional sports event — it is a powerful platform to identify, nurture, and prepare the next generation of athletes to shine on the national and even international stage.

West Kalimantan Governor Urges Airlines to Accelerate New International Routes, AirAsia Leads the Way.

Pontianak – The West Kalimantan Provincial Government is taking concrete steps to improve international air connectivity to support regional economic growth and ease travel for its citizens. On Monday (June 23, 2025), West Kalimantan Governor Drs. H. Ria Norsan, M.M., M.H. welcomed representatives from AirAsia Indonesia-Malaysia’s Government Relations Division at the Governor’s Residence in Pontianak.

During the meeting, Governor Norsan expressed his appreciation for AirAsia’s efforts in reopening international flight routes from Pontianak and highlighted the importance of continuing to expand these connections.

"Thank you to AirAsia for reopening international flights from Pontianak. Hopefully, other airlines will soon follow. This will make it easier for West Kalimantan residents to travel abroad and for foreign tourists to visit our region," said Norsan.

Fast-Tracking Flight Permits for Quicker Launch

Currently, AirAsia serves the Pontianak–Kuching and Pontianak–Kuala Lumpur routes round-trip. However, the government is actively working to open additional routes to Penang and Singapore.

Originally scheduled for launch in September, the Governor is pushing for an earlier timeline. He hopes that all necessary permits can be expedited so that these new routes can begin operating by August 17, 2025, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day.

“We’re requesting that the permits be finalized ahead of schedule. God willing, by mid-August the flights will be ready to take off,” Norsan said.

Supadio Airport’s Role as an International Gateway

This push for new international routes aligns with the recent upgrade of Supadio Airport to international status. While the status has already been inaugurated, improvements and renovations at the airport are still ongoing to enhance passenger experience and meet global standards.

“We want our people to travel internationally without having to go through Jakarta. Departing directly from Pontianak will save time and money,” the Governor added.

Boosting Tourism, Trade, and Regional Connectivity

International flights from Pontianak are expected to not only benefit local travelers but also enhance tourism, trade, and investment opportunities in West Kalimantan. With easier access to the region, West Kalimantan’s natural and cultural attractions could draw more attention from international visitors and businesses.

The Provincial Government is committed to working closely with airlines and national authorities to ensure these routes are implemented smoothly and sustained long-term.

The West Kalimantan Governor's initiative to accelerate international flight routes marks a pivotal step toward enhancing mobility and boosting the regional economy. With routes already active and more on the horizon, Pontianak is well on its way to becoming a key international hub in western Indonesia.

Gawai Nosu Minu Podi: Sacred Cultural Festival from Sanggau that Promotes Green Economy.

Hey, Culture Enthusiasts! Have you ever heard of Gawai Nosu Minu Podi? If not, it’s time to get to know one of Indonesia’s most meaningful traditional festivals from Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. This isn’t just an ordinary celebration—it’s a sacred cultural ritual passed down through generations.

On Friday night, June 20, 2025, the village of Entakai in Kapuas District came alive with spiritual energy and a strong sense of community. The event was officially opened by Sanggau’s Vice Regent, Susana Herpena, S.Sos., M.H., who joined the celebration to show support and honor this important local tradition.

“This is a moment for us as indigenous communities to pause from our daily routines, reflect, give thanks, and pay respect to nature and our ancestors,” said Vice Regent Susana sincerely.

She explained that Nosu Minu Podi literally means “to lift the spirit of the rice.” However, on a deeper level, it symbolizes success in farming, patience, and the harmony between humans and nature.

More Than Culture – It’s Part of Regional Development

This cultural tradition is also aligned with the local government’s mission for regional growth. Vice Regent Susana emphasized that preserving culture, tradition, and the environment is a key pillar of Sanggau’s development strategy.

“Gawai Nosu Minu Podi is a great example of local wisdom that supports cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and green economic development,” she explained.

Through events like this, communities are encouraged to reconnect with ancestral values and learn how to manage natural resources in sustainable and respectful ways. It’s not just about heritage—it’s about building a better, greener future.

Boosting Community Welfare and Local Economy

What makes this festival even more interesting is its impact on the local economy. Besides strengthening community ties, Gawai Nosu Minu Podi opens economic opportunities—from promoting local crops and handmade crafts to attracting cultural tourism.

“We hope that through this celebration, we can stimulate the local economy, improve community welfare, and support the progress of our people,” said Susana.

A Cultural Legacy Worth Preserving

For anyone passionate about Indonesian culture, Gawai Nosu Minu Podi is something truly special. It’s not just rich in tradition and meaning—it carries a powerful message: living in harmony with nature and respecting our ancestors are essential values for a sustainable life.

So let’s support and preserve traditions like these. Culture isn’t just something we remember—it’s something we protect and pass on to future generations.

Surau Raden Sulaiman Historical Traces of Sambas Become a Tourist Destination

Surau Raden Sulaiman Historical Traces of Sambas Become a Tourist Destination
Surau Raden Sulaiman Historical Traces of Sambas Become a Tourist Destination.
Sambas, West Kalimantan - Surau Raden Sulaiman in Sebangun Village, which is the most important part of the historical traces and evidence of Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, is now being worked on and is targeted to become a historical and religious tourist destination in the area.

"Now the government of Sebangun Village has formed a restoration committee. Hopefully this will be realized quickly and make Surau Raden Sulaiman accessible to tourists," said Head of Sebangun Village Sarbini when contacted at Sambas, Monday (20/2/2023).

Sarbini explained why Raden Sulaiman Surau became a tourist destination because Raden Sulaiman was the founding figure as well as the first king of Sambas with the title Sultan Muhammad Shafiuddin I.

From various references, he said, Kota Bangun was the first site of Raja Tengah or the father of Raden Sulaiman who founded a village when he first came to Sambas.

"It was in Bangun City that the forerunner to the establishment of the Islamic Sambas Kingdom, the legacy that has existed until now is a surau, the local community named Surau Raden Sulaiman," he said.

It was also explained that the mention of the term sultanate began when Raden Sulaiman was crowned ruler in Sambas with the title Sultan Muhammad Tsafiuddin.  The Sambas Sultanate only started its history at the beginning of the development of Islam since the early 16th century.

He stated that it was hoped that the Pemdes Sebangun with this historical tour could have an economic impact on the community.

In this way, he said, local residents have the opportunity to earn income, for example by making a kind of trinkets and culinary delights typical of Sebangun Village in the form of processed sago as souvenirs for tourists to take home.

BorneoTribun Pontianak, West Kalimantan - Personnel from the Border Security Task Force of Infantry Battalion 643/Wanara Sakti have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 350 oriental magpie-robins (Copsychus saularis) in Entikong Sub-district, Sanggau District, West Kalimantan Province.

"We managed to secure the 350 wild oriental magpie-robins during an inspection at the border post," commander of the task force, Lieutenant Colonel Hendro Wicaksono, said in Sanggau District on Saturday.

The security personnel, led by Second Sergeant Toni, were conducting a routine inspection of vehicles at the post when they saw a suspicious car, he informed.

The car was found carrying hundreds of wild birds without official documents, he said.

"Furthermore, our personnel detained the driver of the car with the initials TN (46). In addition, we collected the data of the wild animals, which will be submitted to the Entikong Agricultural and Animal Quarantine Center for further processing," the task force commander added.

The driver told the task force that the birds were received from a Malaysian resident in the border area, he informed.

"The oriental magpie-robins were brought into Indonesia through a discreet route to be sold in Sanggau District," he said.

"We are committed to guarding the Indonesian border from any illegal acts, including the smuggling of wild animals," Wicaksono added.

A representative from the Entikong Agricultural and Animal Quarantine Center, Syam Widartoko, lauded the task force, saying it has often thwarted wildlife smuggling in border areas and has acted as a deterrent for people still trying to traffic animals.

“We thank the task force for their good coordination and cooperation, so we can save another wildlife. In the near future, we will release these wild animals to their habitats," he said.

Oriental magpie-robins are not protected by Indonesian law, he said. However, their popularity as cage-birds due to their beautiful singing has led to an increasing decline in their population in some areas, he added. (*)
